Steve Akers Update!

Look at this little feller here. We all wish him a speedy recovery and we all know he'll be back on the saddle before he knows it. If you know Steve, He is a heck of a guy and has been dedicated to the sport for quite some time. He had a sight mishap this past weekend at the Nasty Creek race and was air lifted out to St. Johns Mercy in St. Louis. He had a double compound fracture to his Tibia/Fibia not even 4 miles into the trail on the first lap.
I stopped by and gave him some words of encouragement and hope that he doesn't get too bored in the hospital. Anyone who has ever been in one, knows Magazines and Daytime television is only good for so long. Luckily there is a great deal of support from everyone around here and have been peeking in for a visit here and there. I have known Steve since we raced together in the Junior class and for the past few years have been traveling to the races with him almost every weekend. I will say he is a true warrior and dedicates himself to this sport just as much as the National pros do. He is a stand up guy and will always be there for anyone who needs anything. At any time. We all hope you get a speedy recovery and if you need anything, there are plenty of people around that would drop what they are doing to lend a hand. Keep your head up Steve and again, we wish you the best in your recovery.
Below is a personal update from Steve.
Looks like the second surgery to close the wounds where the bones exited the leg will be put off until at least Thursday.
The first surgery was to repair the broken tibia/fibula. Both bones were broken in 2 different locations, which caused severe trauma to the muscles & muscle linings around those areas. It was so severe that it caused what is called compartment syndrome. This happens when the trauma is so severe that the muscles swell more than the casings will allow, which cuts off blood flow to the foot. Even though the foot was not broken anywhere, the lack of blood flow causes nerve damage and begins to kill the foot right away. This and the blood loss from the exposed bones is why they decided to airlift me asap. I didn't realize how severe it was, and urge any one who is injured to take it as serious as possible!
The accident itself was very low speed, but my foot was caught under the bars as I was trying to hold the bike from landing on my leg. Next all I remember is trying to keep from being pushed over the bars as I felt my leg snap.
This is all part of racing though, and a risk we all take when we get on our bikes. We just have to ask ourselves, is it worth it. For me the answer is yes, definatley! Racing has become a way of life, and this injury has made me realize that the friends that I have made are more like family, especially when times are tough. I can't say thanks enough to those who have left messages, called, and stopped by to visit. It means more than most probably know. I have to say thanks to all of the guys from Gateway, as the whole shop has been behind me throughout the entire winter, and have been very supportive about this mishap. The landowner Larry, also deserves a big thanks for letting us race his land! My dad is taking the news very well, and I couldn't ask for more from him, and the rest of my family. Most of all thanks to Jamie, my wonderful girlfriend who has basically been here with me every minute, and I couldn't do this without her!
I know this is difficult for Steve as he has been putting in the work over the off season and has the help and support from the crew at Gateway Husky/BMW. I know he would like to thank them for everything they have done for him and probably wishes he could have that Huksy on the podium. If you know what I mean. I'll continue to update as news comes in, or keep up with Steve on Facebook as he normally posts a little update here and there as he finds out.
